Our 2019 Hunter’s Shiraz is blend of Shiraz from the Tinklers, Somerset and Will’s Hill vineyards; sites boasting 70, 50 and 40-year-old vines respectively. Predictably, low yields delivered concentrated flavours, but early harvesting ensured the grapes remained fresh and the resulting alcohol low, at just under 13%. We fermented in open top tanks with a combination of naturally occurring and cultured yeast, prior to fourteen months maturation in French oak puncheons – approximately 25% new.
Hunter Burgundy! This is typical of the style of Shiraz that fills me with pride for the region! And not that we’ve had a wet vintage for a while, but the style and quality of Shiraz from 2019 serves as a valuable reminder of why it is we persevere beyond the difficult years in the Hunter.
